This sword carries the Viking sword tradition forward into the Norman era. The Normans themselves descended from Viking settlers who took northern France in the early 10th century, before their descendants went on to conquer England in 1066, gain footholds in Wales and Ireland, and carve out territory in Sicily and the Crusader Levant. The blade’s shallow taper and wide fuller still echo those of its Norse ancestor swords, while the simple, utilitarian crossguard and wheel pommel mark the shift toward the early Medieval arming sword — a robust, hack-and-chop design built for the shield-wall warfare of the 11th century.
