European mail terminology largely derives from French: leggings are chausses, a hood is a coif, mittens are mitons, and a mail collar hanging from a helmet is a camail or aventail. By the time of the Crusades, mail chausses had joined the coif and hauberk to give knights who could afford full coverage a genuinely head-to-foot mail defence. This reproduction recreates that leg protection as a single chausse, battle-ready and suited to full-harness re-enactment.
Chainmail Chausse (Single Leg)
This chainmail sock, or chausse, is completely battle-ready and protects the full leg, following the medieval mail leg-armour tradition. Chausses formed part of the head-to-foot mail coverage that became achievable for wealthier knights by the era of the Crusades. Sold as a single leg piece; order a pair for full coverage.
- Material: Steel mail rings
