Caesarean Sword with Bone Handle

A Late Republican Roman sword of the Caesarean period — the form carried by the legions of Julius Caesar during the Gallic Wars and the civil wars that ended the Republic and inaugurated the Empire. The bone handle with its distinctive swirl-pattern carving reflects the personal investment that soldiers of the professional late Republican army made in the quality of their personal equipment.

The Late Republican Roman army — the professional force created by Marius’s reforms of 107 BC — was a very different institution from the citizen levies of earlier centuries. Soldiers served for years or decades, their loyalty increasingly to their general rather than the state, and their personal equipment became a matter of professional pride. The swords carried by Caesar’s legionaries during the Gallic Wars (58–50 BC) were at a transitional point between the earlier Hispaniensis and the standardised Imperial Mainz type that would follow.

This Deepeeka Caesarean sword features a stainable vegetable-tanned leather scabbard with simple brass decoration — a scabbard that allows the owner to personalise the finish to their preference. The beautiful wood and bone handle features a swirl pattern cut into the bone — the kind of individual detail that distinguished a veteran’s personal sword from a standard issue piece. The brass decoration is restrained and historically appropriate for the period.

A piece of particular appeal for collectors focused on the late Republican period — the era of Caesar, Pompey and Antony, when Roman history pivoted from Republic to Empire.
