  This blackened steel muscle cuirass takes the classical lorica musculata form into a darker, more imposing register, its sculpted torso finished in black with contrasting solid brass accents at the shoulders and sides. Muscle cuirasses of this kind were the preserve of Roman commanders and, in art and statuary, of emperors and deities such as Mars — a style meant to project heroic and even divine authority rather than blend into the ranks.   The Knights Templar, the medieval military religious order founded to protect pilgrims to the Holy Land, remain among the most recognisable figures of medieval military history, their cross a lasting visual symbol.

  This breastplate is crafted from 18-gauge steel with a hand-engraved cross, fitted and adjusted to the torso with a pair of antiqued brass buckles and leather straps that cross-hatch across the back when worn.

  Gladiator Front & Back Plate, Brass

  Unlike the legionary’s segmented cuirass, most gladiators fought in minimal armour, their bare torsos left exposed as part of the spectacle — but certain classes wore a simple chest plate, or cardiophylax, over the heart. This front-and-back plate recreates that limited torso protection, cast in brass to sit over the chest and upper back independently of a full cuirass. Paired with the manica and greaves typical of heavier gladiator types such as the Samnite-derived murmillo or hoplomachus, it forms part of a genuinely varied system of arena equipment rather than uniform battle armour.
