  The manica was a segmented arm defence built using the same overlapping-plate technique as the lorica segmentata body armour, protecting the sword arm from shoulder to wrist. Long associated with the Dacian Wars of the early 2nd century AD, where legionaries faced the falx — a heavy curved blade capable of cutting through a shield’s rim — archaeological finds from sites such as Carlisle show the manica was in use earlier than once believed. This piece attaches independently to protect the weapon arm, built from overlapping steel segments riveted to a leather backing in the same articulated construction as full lorica segmentata cuirasses.

  This full-length brass muscle cuirass follows the classical lorica musculata form, its surface sculpted to mimic an idealised male torso in the tradition established by Greek armourers and inherited by Rome. Worn over a padded subarmalis and secured with leather straps, this style of armour marked out officers, tribunes and commanders rather than the ordinary legionary, who typically wore mail or segmented plate. Its combination of anatomical sculpting and reflective brass surface made it as much a visual statement of rank and heroic bearing as a piece of protective equipment.

  Gothic plate armour is the German style of full body harness that emerged in the 15th century, its fluted ridges and curved surfaces drawing directly on the pointed forms of Gothic architecture and art of the period. Produced in armouring centres such as Augsburg, Nuremberg and Landshut, it reached its peak in the 1480s, when it was considered among the finest and most technically advanced armour in Europe.   Greek Scale Armour Hauberk (Lorica Squamata)

  Known to the Romans as lorica squamata, scale armour built from small overlapping metal plates was used across the ancient Mediterranean world, including by Greek soldiers well before Rome adopted the same construction. This hauberk-style piece steel scales onto a canvas backing, forming a flexible sheet of overlapping protection across the torso. Surviving Roman tombstones, including those of centurions and standard-bearers found at Verona, depict soldiers wearing scale armour of this type, confirming its long service life across the ancient world.
