The Boeotian helmet, possibly originating in the Greek region of Boeotia, is the only ancient Greek helmet type still known today by its correct original name. Modelled on a folded felt sun hat, its wide, undulating brim abandoned the face mask and closed cheekpieces of earlier designs entirely, offering a full field of vision and clear hearing at the cost of some facial protection. The Athenian general and historian Xenophon specifically recommended the Boeotian helmet for cavalry, advice Alexander the Great himself followed by equipping his elite Companion Cavalry with the type.
The Boeotian helmet emerged in the 4th century BC, its design modelled on the Boeotian petasos, a folded felt sun hat, adapted into a bronze or iron helmet with a flared brim that shielded the neck and brow while leaving the face fully exposed. Xenophon recommended it explicitly for cavalry use in his treatise on horsemanship, and Alexander the Great equipped his elite Companion Cavalry (Hetairoi) with the type, depicted wearing it on both the Alexander Sarcophagus and the Alexander Mosaic.
