This standard recreates the distinctive lancehead carried by a beneficiarius, a Roman soldier detached from ordinary duty for staff or administrative service under a senior officer or governor.
Rather than a fabric banner, the beneficiarius carried a distinctively shaped, often perforated lancehead as a badge of office, examples of which have been recovered in real numbers from Roman provincial sites, sometimes dedicated as votive offerings at shrines. This reproduction is worked in carbon steel.
