The muscle cuirass, or lorica musculata, sculpted a warrior’s torso into the idealised heroic physique first developed by Greek armourers and adopted across the Roman world as a mark of rank. This shorter form, ending above the waist, carries a central Gorgon’s head medallion — a protective motif frequently seen on the armour of officers and commanders in Greco-Roman art.
