  Roman Hasta, 7-Foot Spear

  This 7-foot hasta spear is built from hand-forged carbon steel and hardwood, featuring a metal ball and end cap, and ships in two easily assembled sections.

  The gladius was not the only weapon integral to Roman warfare; legionaries also typically carried the pilum, a specialised javelin with a wooden shaft joined to an iron shank and a roughly pyramidal head. Pila varied in weight and size, from heavier versions designed to hit hard and penetrate deep, to lighter versions built for ease of carrying, and the classic pilum’s shank was designed to bend on impact, making it genuinely difficult for an enemy to remove or throw back. The hasta itself was the standard thrusting spear of earlier Roman infantry, later carried more by auxiliary and specialist troops.

  Sparta Shield, Bronze-Faced Hoplon

  This bronze-faced hoplon shield draws on the equipment of Greek heavy infantry, styled after the Spartan tradition with modest, restrained detailing.

  Greek hoplites, including the allied and mercenary contingents that marched with Alexander the Great into the Persian Empire, fought with the traditional hoplite panoply: a thrusting spear (doru), a bronze-faced hoplon shield, and body armour. The earliest depictions of hoplite-style shields appear on proto-Corinthian pottery dating to around 700 BC, showing armoured spearmen carrying the large round shields that would come to define Greek heavy infantry for centuries.

  This reproduction recreates that bronze-faced hoplon form, suited to a Spartan or general Greek hoplite impression.
