17th Century Closed Burgonet Helmet
The closed burgonet represents the evolution of Renaissance armor into the early modern battlefield, offering enhanced facial protection while retaining mobility. Widely used across Europe during the Thirty Years’ War, this helmet reflects the transitional nature of warfare in the 17th century.
This example features a fully enclosed design with a barred visor, allowing for both protection and visibility. The articulated construction enables the front section to open, making it easier to wear and adjust—an important feature for cavalry and officers.
Crafted from 16-gauge steel, the helmet includes a fitted interior with padded lining and a leather chin strap for secure wear. Its robust yet elegant form makes it suitable for reenactment, historical display, and collectors of early modern European armor.
A similar closed burgonet can be found in the collection of the Higgins Armory Museum.
