A leather belt fitted with a brass chape and buckle cast with lion and griffin motifs, two of the most significant creatures in Medieval heraldic tradition.

The lion and griffin were among the most widely used creatures in Medieval European heraldry, the lion representing courage and nobility, and the griffin — a hybrid of eagle and lion — combining the eagle's mastery of the sky with the lion's dominance on the ground, making it a popular symbol of guardianship and power. Heraldic imagery like this became increasingly formalised through the 11th and 12th centuries, the period in which Norman lords across England and the continent adopted and displayed distinctive personal and family emblems.
